ENGR 4801 Rapid Prototyping and Reverse Engineering

  1. Find a toy or a product with no more than 10 parts.
  2. Test the system (product or machine) in concern, to see if it is capable of its claims. Please elaborate about its performance, and its value (including its cost to the customers).
  3. Develop the black box model of the system with its inputs and outputs clearly identified.
  4. Develop the glass box model of the system (similar to the system level design chart or an assembly chart). Add an exploded assembly photograph of the system to the answer of this requirement.
  5. Identify the materials and manufacturing processes involved in making the parts within the glass box model.
  6. Re-engineer the system by recommending design and performance (functionality) improvements.

Note: Use the Reverse Engineering – Methodology and Technology PPTs as references.

You can also use an existing reverse engineering case study – not from the slides given and summarize it to answer the requirements above as an alternative.

ENGR 4801 Rapid Prototyping and Reverse Engineering – 15 points

After conducting a literature review, prepare a mind map organizing materials utilized in 3D printing and additive manufacturing (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites – you can break these materials into subcategories within the mind map).
